How GEO works in practice
GEO doesn't optimize content for search engine rankings but for getting generative AI systems to name, recommend and cite a brand in their answers. The difference from SEO: instead of ten blue links, the AI produces a single answer – if you're not in it, you're invisible. GEO measures therefore work on three levers: citable content (clear facts, numbers, definitions), technical accessibility for AI crawlers (robots.txt, llms.txt, structured data) and authority signals such as consistent brand mentions in sources the AI trusts.
An example
If a user asks ChatGPT “Which CRM is right for small teams?”, the model internally compares dozens of providers and names two or three. GEO makes sure your solution is one of them – for example through a comparison page with clear numbers that Perplexity cites as a source, or through consistent mentions in trade articles. Success becomes measurable through metrics like Visibility Score, Share of Voice and Citation Rate.
GEO and SEO: not either-or
Both disciplines overlap – clean structure, good content and E-E-A-T help in both worlds. The difference is the goal: SEO optimizes for clicks from rankings, GEO for mentions in AI answers. As more and more buying decisions are prepared directly in AI chats, GEO adds the fastest growing channel to classic search engine optimization.
